Hold Fast to Dreams
Hold Fast to Dreams R.B., Co-Founder and Executive Director
“We have a dream”... this was on the opening slide of the first PowerPoint presentation we made almost 12 years ago. We were rolling out our vision for a summer program for children from low-income families in the Smith Mountain Lake region. The support and excitement we experienced that day told us we were on to something. Every group we talked to caught the spirit. As we shared the needs we had uncovered in our community, others began to share in our dream.
Here we are at the end of 2017. That early dream became a reality. And we keep dreaming new dreams about serving and supporting our youth. Our community keeps on supporting our dreams with their time, resources and encouragement. Who knew where those early dreams would lead us? Who knows where our new dreams will lead us? Who knows how the lives of the children we serve will be enriched by our presence? Although we don’t know all of those answers, we do know that SML Good Neighbors is making a difference. We know that we will keep dreaming; we know that we will keep acting on those dreams. Dreams without action are simply daydreams.
To all of the students, past, present and future, who have been in our programs; to all of their families and to our board members, staff, summer interns and supporters, I leave you with this poem by Langston Hughes.
Hold fast to dreams For if dreams die Life is a broken-winged bird That cannot fly. Hold fast to dreams For when dreams go Life is a barren field Frozen with snow.
May your New Year's resolution for 2018 be to: hold fast to your dreams--hold fast, hold fast, hold fast.
