One year ago this week, SML Good Neighbors achieved an extraordinary milestone: being named a Library of Congress Successful Practices Honoree. Selected as one of only 15 organizations globally recognized during the International Literacy Day awards, the honor affirmed everything our community has built together since 2007.

Looking back on that moment, especially as we prepare to enter our 20th year of service, we are filled with deep gratitude.

A National Honor Rooted in Local Heart

When Executive Director Lietz accepted the award, the message was clear: this achievement belongs to the entire Smith Mountain Lake community.

"This recognition reflects the dedication of our staff, volunteers, and community partners who make our mission possible every day. Together, we are working to create a nurturing community that encourages integrity, values, responsibility, and a love of learning."Lietz, Executive Director

For nearly two decades, SML Good Neighbors has worked to break barriers for local youth across Bedford and Franklin Counties. To date, that shared commitment has delivered remarkable local impact:

  • 65,000+ Free Books placed directly into the hands of local children

  • 100,000+ Nutritious Meals provided during out-of-school time

  • 118 College Leadership Internships established, alongside over $32,600 in post-secondary scholarships

  • Free Summer & Afterschool Programming for thousands of rising 1st–6th graders

Sustained by Community Support

An award from the Library of Congress validates our model, but it is the day-to-day devotion of our local community that powers it. From our weekend bag packers and reading buddies to our donors, board members, local businesses, and churches, you make this work possible.

As we look toward two decades of impact, your encouragement fuels our mission to nourish, educate, and support the next generation of Good Neighbors. Thank you for walking alongside us on this journey.
