How can I help?
The Good Neighbors Programs have grown rapidly since the first camp in 2008. As a matter of fact, we initially planned to serve a maximum of 100 children but served 161 in the 2011 Summer Enrichment Day Camps. Compare that to 65 children participating in the 2008 camps. And, we know there are many more children in the schools we serve who would benefit from this program. For example, there are approximately 750 children in the six schools we serve who qualify for the free or reduced-cost meal program. And, in addition to these four-week day camps, we are providing lunches and weekend backpacks for approximately 240 children enrolled in summer school programs in these schools.
Because the children we serve come from families with limited resources, we provide all of these programs at no cost to families. The funds for these programs are provided by area churches, civic groups, businesses, individual contributions and grants from foundations. The Good Neighbors programs have become an important part of this community, serving the needs of children in ways that were not available before. Parents and school officials attest to the impacts this program is having on the kids. However, to sustain the current programs, to make these programs available to more children, and to develop new programs, SML Good Neighbors needs your financial help. The current cost to send a child to the four-week camp is $450.
